“Nasty” new virus targets all Microsoft operating systems

July 17, 2010

Microsoft disclosed on Friday that a new virus has been detected and they are currently working on a fix.  The underlying vulnerability appears to be present in all flavors of Microsoft operating systems.  The virus is able to work even if AutoRun and AutoPlay are disabled.  User Account Control is also circumvented by the virus.

More alarming was the disclaimer by Microsoft that the virus could easily be spread through networks:  “Affected shortcuts can also be distributed over network shares or remote WebDAV shares.”

The only short term fix to block the vulnerability involves editing the registry
