New stealth attack using tabs in web browsers

May 26, 2010

Hackers have come up with a new way to trick people into providing valuable information when surfing the Internet.  Modern browsers now have tabs which allow you to open multiple websites and quickly switch between them without having to switch to multiple windows.

Hackers have come up with way to have an inactive tab (not the one you are using) switch to a fake login screen.  The fake screen may be for your bank, FaceBook, Gmail, Amazon, etc and appears to be real.  You will switch to that tab, and usually try to login again without thinking.  Your login information will be transmitted to the hacker.

This new tactic works on web browsers for Macs and Windows.
