Ability to downgrade new systems to Windows XP ending soon

May 8, 2010

Businesses ability to purchase new systems with Windows XP Professional loaded (referred to as a downgrade) will be ending soon.  Microsoft announced in 2009 that downgrade rights would end 18 months after the release of Windows 7 or when Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is released (whichever comes first).

Microsoft announced in March that they were working on Service Pack 1 but did not disclose a timetable.  According to The Register the release date for SP1 is likely Q4 of this year.  This means that there will only be 4 – 6 more months left for businesses to purchase computer systems with Windows XP Pro.

If your company is planning to purchase new systems and you require Windows XP Pro, you will need to accelerate your purchase plans.
