Microsoft retracts one patch from April software update

April 25, 2010

In an unusual move, Microsoft removed one of the eleven updates from their April distribution.  The update is no longer available for download using Windows Update or Windows Server Update Service.

Microsoft representatives stated that the update was supposed to correct an issue in Windows 2000 (an older operating system) but did not fix the intended problem.  Normally the update would remain in place and a new update would be released at the next update cycle (May) or sooner if the issue were critical.  This leads us to believe that the patch caused other unintended side effects.

The original security bulletin is located here.  Microsoft states that you do not need to uninstall the patch.  But, they did say you need to implement the other workarounds mentioned in the bulletin.
